About me
Evie Burrows, language tutor
Having lived in three countries by the age of seven, I’ve been interested in how language works from a very young age. As a shy child, however, school was always something scary. With my tutoring, I provide a safe space for students where they can feel heard and where language learning can become enjoyable.
My experiences living in Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, and the UK have given me firsthand insight into how different educational systems work and what it’s like to adjust to a new one. I know how intimidating it can feel to adapt to a new environment or prepare for a high-stakes exam, and I aim to be a calm, supportive presence throughout that journey. I also understand how essential language skills are for feeling confident, included, and connected in a new community, and I’m here to support you every step of the way.
My background
Language study
I have an MPhil and a BA in Linguistics from the University of Cambridge, and have worked as a research assistant in phonetics. My academic background has given me a deep understanding of how languages work. Whether you struggle with pronunciation or grammar or simply want to understand why a language works the way it does, I can help bring depth and clarity to your language learning journey.

Creativity and community
Outside of tutoring, I love to write. I’ve had short stories published in competitions and dream of becoming a published author some day! I’m also a co-founder of Connect La Côte, a community association which hosts events in the La Côte region to help foster connections across generations and backgrounds. Community and creativity are important values to me, and I bring this spirit into my lessons.
Academic background
I’ve always loved studying languages. As a teenager, I spent my free time learning Mandarin! Over the years, I’ve studied over seven languages, so I know firsthand how rewarding, but also overwhelming, language learning can be. I understand what it’s like to face a never-ending vocabulary list, struggle with confidence, or feel overwhelmed, and I can help you move past these challenges with encouragement and strategies that work.
Teaching style
I believe that learning happens best when you feel comfortable, understood, and engaged. My approach is warm, flexible, and student-led: I adapt each lesson to your goals, pace, and interests. That might mean creative conversation practice, structured grammar classes, real-world materials, or vocabulary games: whatever helps you feel confident and curious. Whether you're aiming for good grades, fluent conversations, or simply to enjoy the process more, I’m here to support you.
